Medical Office Specialist w/Advanced ESL

This program consists of 1440 hours of the Medical Office Specialist curriculum as listed above and 60 hours of Advanced Transitional ESL for total course hours of 1500.

Medical Office Specialist w/ESL

This program consists of 1440 hours of the Medical office Specialist curriculum as listed above and 360 hours of ESL 5-6 ( including Advanced Transitional ESL.), for total course hours of 1800. Upon completion of the ESL component of the program, students will be required to take an exam before continuing with this curriculum.

Medical Office Specialist w/ Comprehensive ESL

This program consists of 1800 hours of the Medical office Specialist curriculum as listed above and 360 hours of ESL 3-4, for total course hours of 2160
Upon completion of the ESL component of the program, students will be required to take an exam before continuing with this curriculum.

Concepts of Desktop Publishing

This course is an introduction to the many features of desktop publishing. The students
will learn to create and format various kinds of publications using special software
package. Students will gain hands-on experience in designing newsletters, reports,
brochures, flyers and resumes.

Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Procedures I

This course covers the body organization and processes, medical specialties and measurements.
The students will learn about common diseases and disorders, the skeletal, muscular, circulatory
and respiratory systems.

Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Procedures II

This course teaches the students the following: the nervous system, the sense organs, the endocrine
system, digestive system, urinary system and body fluids and reproduction. Medical emergencies
and first aid is also covered.

Business English:  Correspondence

This course provides a basic foundation for writing general office correspondence with major
emphasis given to the structure of business letters and the composition of various types of office
correspondence.

Business English:  Oral Communications

This course emphasizes on teaching the student the oral communication skills necessary for
successful business management. Topics include preparing a business speech, skills for business
meetings and effective telephone conversations.

Business Math

Students are introduced to the basic mathematical skills encountered in the office and required by
modern business. This course focuses on proficiency in solving business mathematical problems.

Career Development

Students will learn the skills how to successfully market themselves and obtain gainful
employment. Subjects covered include, the preparation of resumes, cover letters and interview
techniques.

Client Relations

This course teaches students how to effectively provide courteous customer service. The effects of
customer service on business success and how to deal with difficult customer encounters.

Internship

This is on-the-job experience in a physician’s office or other health-care facility. Learning
objectives are met and evaluation is provided by the field supervisor where the student is interning
as well as the internship coordinator.

Introduction to Computers

This primary theory course will acquaint students with the concepts and capabilities of the
computer system, including word processing, spreadsheet, database management and
graphics software.

Keyboarding I – Beginning

This course provides instruction in the proper operating techniques, mastery of the
keyboard, knowledge of the parts of the typewriter, centering, erasing techniques, basic
letters, memoranda, tabulations and envelopes.

Keyboarding II – Intermediate

Students are given instruction in production typing which includes work in business
letters, memoranda, reports, business forms and special tabulations.
Prerequisite: Keyboarding I.

Medical Office Procedures

This course provides and reinforces the essential medical office procedures encountered in
a medical office environment. Major emphasis is given to medical vocabulary, medical
forms and medical correspondence.
Prerequisite: Keyboarding I.

Medical Records & Insurance Coding I

This course emphasizes the insurance aspect of medical records management. As more
people in today’s society pay for their medical treatment through health insurance plans,
learning the coding and filing of insurance forms has become essential to the field of
Medical Assistant. Analysis of accident reports is reviewed and special emphasis is given to
asking the patients hard-to-ask questions.

Medical Records & Insurance Coding II

This course is a continuation of Medical Records and Insurance Coding I. Students increase
their knowledge of proper billing and coding procedures.
Prerequisite: Medical Records and Insurance Coding I.

Medical Records & Insurance Coding III

This course is a continuation of Medical Records and Insurance Coding II. Students further
their medical records management and coding skills. Exercises of actual patient’s record
maintenance and billing practices are emphasized.
Prerequisite: Medical Records and Insurance Coding II.

Medical Terminology

This course emphasizes the vocabulary utilized in the medical field. Major emphasis is
placed on the definition and spelling of medical terms.

Medical Typing and Transcription

This course prepares students with the Basic Skills to transcribe medical correspondence
from verbal transcription machines. Proper grammar and punctuation are stressed. Also,
this course emphasizes the development of speed, accuracy and proofreading.
Prerequisite: Keyboarding II or equivalent.

Microsoft Office

This comprehensive course teaches students how to effectively utilize the Microsoft Office Professional software package. Subjects include word processing using MS Word, creating spreadsheets using MS Excel, building a database with MS Access, designing printed presentations using MS PowerPoint.
